Welcome to my psychotherapy web site. My name is Nan Joy. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 16 years experience helping individual men, women, and couples work through a wide range of difficulties.
Sometimes what you feel on the inside feels too big to share with friends — too much to tell loved ones and still too much for you to hold on your own. That's how therapy can help. Therapy is a place where together we develop a map of your internal life, how you feel, why you feel what you feel, and what to do about all of it. You may feel kind of desperate to talk — to start examining these feelings and understanding them. If that's how you feel, I hope you'll call to set up an appointment. Together we can begin to understand how you feel and think about ways you might create a life you'd like to live in.
When your inside life is distressed — anxious, sad, numb — then your outside life is challenged. You might use food, drugs, relationships, sex, alcohol, television, or work as a way to numb your interior experience. Or, you may experience chronic anxiety, depression, or other distressing mental health symptoms. These symptoms are a signal that there is something "off" inside of you.
We all seek to have a happy and content inner life. Sometimes, we have to tease out the discomfort inside of us and compassionately unwind the trauma or experience that created the discomfort. Facing this can be difficult or frightening, but the rewards are immense.
